'93 850 Changer installation Problems
I installed an Alpine changer compatable with my stock stereo w/ changer controls in a '93 850 GLT and I get no response from the head unit. When I push the "CD" button, nothing happens; just keeps on playing the radio. Re-checked all connections and even reconnected the power lead on the adapter to no avail. I know the changer is receiving electricity as it loads a cd and ejects the cartridge, both which require power. Any thoughts are much appreciated.

HI, are you using a Volvo-to-Alpine CD changer adapter? If not you will need this because Volvo intentionally changed the pin orientation of the DIN plug so that it will work only with Volvo changer. The weird thing is that the Volvo changers are made by Alpine. The CD changer adapter restores the correct orientation to make the Volvo head unit work with the Alpine.
See the following site to see what the adapter looks like:

Hope this helps.

OK, from my experience installing the adapter 5 years ago I had to try 2 different brands before making it work. I don't remember the brand but I do recall reading at that time a couple of manufacturers used the same generic named VOLALP for the adapter, and some worked only for certain Volvo head units (mine is an SC-811). The one I heard that is most reliable (but not which I am using) is the Stinger. I think I'm using a Peripheral product.
Hope this helps.

Hi again, suggest you dig up past info using Google Groups (groups.google.com) . Search the alt.autos.volvo forum for keywords "Alpine CD changer". You should get tons of info there from DIY installers. I know cause that's how I figured out how to install mine (in the glove box even if there is a CD compartment in the wagon). Cheers.
