Hi,
My 1989 740 GLE 16Valve volvo wouldn't start in the rain today. I've had this problem before when it was wet out and it stalled. Otherwise, the car runs well, although it has 260,000 km on it. The dashboard lights come on, but the engine doesn't even turn over. What could I look for? Any ideas greatly appreciated!
1989 740 won't run in wet weather Topic is solved
Hi Carol
You say your car will not start, does the engine crank over and not fire (start), or does nothing happen when you turn the key?

if the engine stalls while driving, be sure to set your shift lever on Neutral before attempting to restart.

I had similar "no crank" check for open iin curcuit from shift control lever lockout switch to cranking motor. This has is three canon plugs which have high potential for intermittant and /or partial FAILURE. oN THE nO START PROBLeM, WITH YOUR HIGH MILEs and age YOU PROBABLY WOULD BENEFIT AND MAYBE CURE BY INSTALLING A SET OF IGNITION WIRES AND PLUGS EXPECT TO PAY AROUND $50 PLUS 50 MORE TO INSTALL OR DO IT YOUR SELF. Old wires loose their insulation resistance character. The spark get to the plug only in dry wether. Jim Ilgenfritz II floribunda

Isn't there a spray that drives out damp on cables?

WD-40 was specifically designed to remove water ("W"ater "D"isplacer formula #40). Its ideal for spraying on wet electrical stuff to get rid of the dampness.
Now....
Since you said it won't even turn over, its not your ignition system, its your starting system.
Something is stopping it from turning over and cranking (by your description). If it stalls while running, then that is likely an ignition wire system. You described both scenarios.
