So ive had two volvo 850's; one was an 850 GLT 1996, now I have 850 Turbo 1995. Both has ended up with a bad heater core. I am not sure if this is something common, but with a lil bit of "get to it " its not a hard fix. I replaced the heater core on the 96, soon I will be replacing the one in the 95 and will post pictures.
Just to give you an idea of how I fixed the 96' I replaced the heater core in my 96 by first pulling back a corner of the carpet closet to the center console on each side. Then removing the plastic covers on the center console to reveal the heater core casing. After that I removed any torx head screws I seen holding the bottom piece of the casing together to the top piece. Now I had done some rigging by cutting the two in/out metal lines to where I had enough room to put a hose on with a hose clamp. Before I replaced the heater core I just ran a hose from the driver side to the passenger side enging coolant ports to bypass the heater core system, which worked fine. Now the heater core itself was a pain to get out of the casing and a lil to get back in after screwing the metal lines onto the new heater core. But once it was in the casing and new hoses put on it was well worth it that winter in the appalachian mountains. I don't think I mentioned that I bought one off of ebay for around $40 that worked great.
I hope this has given you some help and if you have any pointers for on my next replacement please let me know.
