'01 S80 stalls, chugs, shakes... TPS?

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

'01 S80 stalls, chugs, shakes... TPS?

Post by dsward18 »

i have a 2001 volvo s80. on the little screen near my rpm meter it told me that i have an engine problem. so i took it to a mechanic in my town. he told me he is 99% sure it is the tps thats making it just shut off. so yesterday i took off the throttle body to clean it and to put the sensor in. i took off both plastic end caps on the trottle body to see if it was in there, sadly it was not. so then i went to go check if it was hooked up to my gas pedal, and again it was not there. im lost right now. can anyone help me out with it. and tell me where the sensor is located so i can change it? Thanks

What was the engine code? Can you describe the symptoms a bit more? How many miles are on the car? It looks like your model has an electronic throttle module, or ETM. Given that you have an ETM, I'm not sure you even have a throttle position sensor. I'd head over to Don's ETM Room to do some research.

Some symptoms... i was at a red light and my engine just sht off, my car would like chug when i was was just letting my car coast coming to a stop, it would like shake when i got it up to 50MPH and stop at about 70 or 75 MPH. Hmmmm it has 140k on it. Oh and it also shut off a few times when i was just coasting around a corner. oh and i dont know the code.

i talked to the volvo dealer yesterday and the mechanic there told me that I would need to buy a brand new ETM because there are mutiple sensors in it, including the tps. and he said i could not replace the sensor.

Sounds about right. Some folks mention success w/ Xemodex replacements, as opposed to going w/ another OEM ETM. I'm not sure if they have one for your model, but it's worth checking out. Did you check out Don's ETM Room? Lots of people have had the same problem.
