I am researching the 2000 Volvo s40. As a single, professional female, this seems like a good fit for me and will still be sporty enough to be a fun drive.
I have been reading consumer reviews and they seem mixed. Mostly people who don't like working on cars or keeping them what I considered to be well maintained. I don't mind fixing some things like bulbs continuously going out (does this really happen?), air filters, etc....but my mechanic says the timing belt will need changing soon (80k mi on it) (is this typical) and I am not going to attempt that alone.
As Volvo owners can you tell me your experiences?
Is it true the bulbs go out a lot?
Do you always take it to the volvo dealer? or special mech for only volvos?
Will this car last many many miles with some TLC, but not loads of money?
Volvos seem to age well in body style and there are quite a few older models that I see driving around.
Any owner comments are VERY appreciated.
Thanks!

My mom had a V40 (wagon) and i liked it. Not large enough for me (6'3"), but a good looking and good-driving car nonetheless.
She got frustrated with the seats -- they're close to the floor.
This car is actually a joint venture between Mitsubishi + Volvo. I don't think there is a Mitsu equavalent here in the States, but it's likely that it's sold under the Mitsu brand in other countries.
Brake pads go quickly, and brake dust is a cosmetic problem.

And just do your homework before you buy anything. There are a ton of replies in this forum on how to go about buying a used Volvo.

Volvo Cars US recommend timing belt and tensioner change at 105,000 miles. The engine drive belt, for alternator etc., at 90,000 miles. The air filter at 30,000 miles.
As for bulbs burning out, I agree that Volvos go through more bulbs than other cars not fitted with day running lights, but they don't go that often. I am now on my 5th Volvo and I am nowhere near being bankrupt through buying bulbs. They are also a worthwhile safety feature which I missed when I bought a Ford on a wild impulse. What a load of rubbish that was!
I agree with Matthew, do your homework before deciding.
Bill.
