It's an ass-kicking filter even for my naturally breathing engine!

Disconnect your battery for 20 mins or so to let your ECU self-adapt to the new gas-air mixture you're getting with your K&N. If that doesn't work, I'd suspect that "coincidently" you're dealing with another issue. You can always put the old filter back in and see if it goes back to normal to see if it's the K&N, but to be honest, I've never heard of a K&N doing this to a car.

I am a new volvo owner but my dad owned a volvo for many years before I left the house so I'm pretty familiar with them. I just got out of my nissan se-r and honda accord so the wifey could have a yukon, and I found a mint condition s70 t5 5sp with 40k on it so I bought it for about 11k.

I've yet to do any upgrades, but I wanted to mention about the K&N filters and make a recommendation. K&N makes a very good product and the fact is that it does allow more dirt through than a paper filter, but a whole lot more air. More air proportionally to the dirt incoming I might add. The miscropic dirt should be of no concern unless you don't change your oil but every 10000 miles. I change with mobil1 synthetic every 5k so there is no reason to worry. Paper filters are cheap and they don't really alow air in except when the engine sucks at it and spreads the fibers to pull air through it. Very bad for economy.

The only reason car makers put in paper filters is for cost... they are cheap, they are paper, and the performance gain other wise is not worth the added cost to them. We pay to change them and they could argue that they let less dirt through, but if you made a filter using high quality materials such as what K&N uses then you would truelly have a filter that lets even less dirt in and still has better flow. BUT like I said it doesn't mater if you change your oil once in a while.

Now my recommendation... AEM makes all kinds of great cold air intakes for hondas, toyotas, nissan.. etc ya know ... japanese and they have used K&N filters with their products for years, they have developed a new filter that does allow more air flow and filters even better than the K&N, about as good as a paper filter, and this filter requires no oiling, and minimal cleaning. They published all the testing and have videos on their website... check it out here...

This is what I'm getting for my car, and since it requires no oiling there is not even the slightest risk of screwing up my maf like there is with the K&N. The risk is miniskule but the other benefits only add, so I'm getting the AEM dryflow, and I thought I'd just share a little rice burner wisdom for our superiorly engineered swede rides. <--- thats my term... don't swipe it I'm putting it on my lisence plate.

Swede, do they make a drop-in panel filter? The reason I ask is that the air filter box set-up is really the best that can be done on our cars unless you really want to go crazy and try to bring in air from below...like through the air dam, next to the fog lights, but then we're getting into possible wet conditions. With a cone filter under the hood the heat soak is too great on the turbo during hot months. All of this is talked about in length on several Volvo forums including the main mod-friendly one- volvospeed.com I didn't see a drop-in filter on the AEM site so I'm wondering. Also, is there any way to order their products from the web? Their nearest retailer is over 100 miles from where I live, when I looked for one.

Unfortunately they don't make drop in filters, in fact the dryflow is supposed to be for trucks, but you know a cone filter is a cone filter. I figured the heat was too much under the hood, so I'm gona probably try to put the cone filter inside the box sort of or make something else that bring the cooler air to it. I noticed there is a little plate atatched to the front of the breather tube for the airbox i'm gona take that off cause it comes in behind the grill and I figure I could get alot more cool air in there that way. I'll post later if I come up with a great way to install it.

The filters are still quite new, so its a little hard to find a place close to you, but you can order them online. I gota get through this month before I have money to mess with that stuff, but I'll let you know.
