What happens if I put winter wheels on w/out TPMS ?

How to go faster, stop quicker, and turn harder. Chips, exhaust, larger turbos, bigger/slotted/drilled rotors, high performance brake pads, manual boost controllers, performance shocks/struts/springs, airbox mods and more! Also discussion on HID and Xenon lights, aftermarket foglights and other exterior lighting.

What happens if I put winter wheels on w/out TPMS ?

Post by fazool »

My AWD 07S60 has TPMS. I've been thinking of getting junk wheels and winter tires and I found a set for a great price, locally. But I got to wondering what will my TPMS system do when it gets no signal at all from the sensors ?

My thoughts being either :

1) the sensor is normally NOT transmitting and low pressure sends a low pressure signal OR
2) the sensor failsafes and always sends a pressure "good" signal and when it loses the signal it declares low pressure?

You'll get a TPMS fail message on DIM screen with the TPMS lamp lit.

You can thank the people who go left-right-left 90 degrees each way from center when the Firestone tread flies off after being run low for a few hundred miles on a hot day.
The bad part is vehicles with TPMS still go down the road with obviously run low for a long time tires. The lamp isn't enough of a deterrent. When the lamp comes on the accessory circuits need to shut down. No radio, a/c, cell phone charging, GPS, or DVD player for the kids. You know the tires will get aired up or repaired IMMEDIATELY when that happens.

You know, you said that half tongue-in-cheek but there's actually some interesting motivators in that. Several things could be motivated that way. I actually think its a great idea.

Have you ever seen the same car drive around your neighborhood for weeks without brake lights? Why do they do that? Or with a headlight out?
