I finally found a replacement engine for the '99 XC from a wrecked 2000 GLT SE. My wife started loosing her patience with the car eating her favorite space in the driveway about 8 months ago and I was just about ready to just list it as a junker on CL and pay my stupid tax when I ran across the add. The engine is getting yanked now and it should be ready for pickup early next week.
I was pricing out all of the seals, PCV, and the timing belt components, etc for the replacement engine and it was amazing. The prices between IPD, eEuroparts, and FCP were all over them map from part to part. Once the prices were totaled, they were all within $5.00 on $375.00 worth of stuff.

Ozark lee,
Congratulations on the happy find. Persistence pays off.
Out of curiosity, how will the price of the new engine with renewed parts compare with a rebuild of the original, or was the original beyond that point?

The original was pretty much done. I bought the car thinking it just needed a head gasket but after the head came off we found two broken pistons and horribly scored cylinders. I picked up the used engine for $700.00 - removed - and it is in town so there is no freight. The replacement has 126 k miles on it. I have no idea what happened to cause the wreck on the S70 but every corner was smashed on the car. The guy I bought the engine from said he was going to keep it around until I get finished so that I can snag any extra parts I might need.
Re-building the original engine would require a fair amount time and money at the machine shop to bore out the cylinders and 5 new piston and ring sets. While it is apart I would also replace the rod and crank bearings. The old head may or may not be good, it looked OK but I never even took it into a machine shop to get it checked.
Other than the RMS, I was planning on servicing the PCV, replacing the timing belt / tensioner / rollers / water pump, and various other seals even if the original engine just needed the head gasket so that money is pretty much all the same.

Hurray!
Make sure you get all the coolant hoses while you've got it out...turbo ones included. They're a pain on the AWD models
