I have a 99 s70 fwd, no turbo 2.4 liter. My dad is a mechanic at a Chrysler dealership and I took my car to him to get the oil changed. We swapped cars and he was just going to borrow mine for the evening. When he went to leave, after changing the oil, it was idling erratically and wouldn't accelerate. He cleaned the air filter and then it ran fine and he got it home. I came to get it and it wouldn't start--the same things it was doing to him. So he cleaned the throttle body for me and then it seemed fine. I drove it a whole day with no problems. Then that night, it started doing the same thing. It was idling rough and I had to floor it to get it to even get to 20 mph before I could pull off the side of the road.
I scanned the car because it was turning the check engine light on and codes like p1017, p1024, and p1031 were coming up, but there were a few more. Can't find out what any of these mean.
My dad suggested replacing the mass air flow sensor as a start. I got one used from a parts place that came from a car with I believe 96000 miles. It didn't fix the problem, so I took it back. I then ordered a used, yellow label throttle body off of eBay to try that. My dad installed it to replace my white label one. It seems to have remedied the problem, as it will accelerate just fine now, but when the car is idling, it is idling rough. I know I need to get the throttle body programmed, but just wanted to know if this is normal for it to be idling rough still. I don't want to get it programmed if it is going to be the same afterwards.

XeModex has a new service that will reprogram your throttle body to your VIN. The dealers have varied results with this procedure but XeModex are confident they can do it. If it were me I'd try a dealer first; much cheaper but then again no guarantees.
Generally you can't put a yellow label ETM in to replace a white label unless they were at the same software level and the only way to hget the software level is to communicate with the ETM through Vida/Dice (Volvo's diagnostic software and hardware).
I've been pulling ETMs and rebuilding the contacting sensors with non-contacting sensors for a couple of months now and some of them being sent to me have board problems. Some people wash them and let water based degreasers run past the throttle plate, down the main throttle plate shaft and into the contacting sensor causing a major sensing board malfunction.
Make sure the used one has been tested and gave a good idle and no throttle related codes in the car it was removed from.
Cost of XeModex service? $199 plus return postage. XeModex call it the Ecoline.
