Re: Just got my first one
The 1 vac leak could cause both codes.

After reading through this thread, I went out and looked at the car. I traced the lines from the tank ( the best that I could) all the way to the engine compartment and found nothing wrong with any of them.pmortv70xc wrote:It could also be the j-tube by the fuel filter - an easy repair

I'm thinking that the line that I found disconnected was the problem. I will know for sure once I get it back to the parts store and use their scan tool to clear the codes.
Thanks to all for their input.

Buy a cheap scan tool from Amazon and keep it in the glove compartment. you'll need it often but generally just for little things like 172, 0455, 171 etc. The one I got was about 26 dollars and works fine for a 98.

The scan tool I bought for $100 has more than paid for itself the last couple of years. I've used it to clear nuisance codes, troubleshoot, and verify that shops are actually doing the work they are supposed to do. Now my car has no CEL's at all!rmmagow wrote:Buy a cheap scan tool from Amazon and keep it in the glove compartment. you'll need it often but generally just for little things like 172, 0455, 171 etc. The one I got was about 26 dollars and works fine for a 98.

Yeah, I've also got a Enginuity PC based scantool for doing deep "while-you're-driving" diagnostics. Good for fuel trim indicators MAF performance etc. When I got years ago it was cheap, not so much anymore but it is a great tool for gathering data for a deeper look at what's going on with the car. I think threr are lot of tools/software like this now, some even for an iPhone.
