Thanks Bill,
I have genuine replacement lifts and I can't see that the pins have a spring. I've attached a photo of what I mean by spring clip.
The pins in the strut look more fitted and machined and I can't see which direction to tap them out.

That is a spring pin, sometimes called a roll pin.
Bill.

Thanks Bill,
So the spring pin in the picture from the last post doesn't look like what's in my struts. How about in your experience?
Maybe there is one end inside? Both ends of the pin look machined to me. I can't see a way to actually remove it as of yet. Must be some sort of trick to it.

Ok silly me. I didn't have a frame of reference so I was looking at the pins which are the swivel pins that slot in on the lower side. The spring pin is indeed at the top and seems like it will just tap in.
billofdurham wrote:I have never used a press. Open the lid to the full extent of the hydraulic strut and prop it open with a piece of 2" x 1" (minimum) timber. Remove one strut and replace it with a new one. Do the same at the other side.
Bill.
This method is impossible on my 1984 Volvo 242DL.
The Trunk Lifts won't fit in place without being at least partially compressed. Volvo has a special tool to hold them once compressed. Wire is anther way to go but be careful these things hold a lot of pressure.
