new gas door project

So, my gas door hinge broke again (normal & expected weak part that notoriously breaks). Not a problem, in and of itself and only $11 and 10 minutes to replace.

I noticed, however, that the gas door was starting to suffer some sub-paint bubbling and rust on the bottom edge, from the gasoline exposure.

So, while I had this off I decided to touch that bottom edge up. Wrapped and padded the door and secured it in a vise. Then with a tiny drum sander and tiny wire wheel, ground away the blisters, bubbles, paint and corrosion. Applied some "rsut convertor" and let it dry overnight. This morning I taped off the door and sprayed some sandable filler primer on that bottom edge.

Tonight I hope to touch it up with OEM touch up paint, let it dry then apply a second coat, let that dry overnight, then smooth that out and apply a clear coat, let that dry while I'm at work, then polish that out and reinstall my door.

Finished up this morning. A layer of rust convertor, a layer of primer, two coats of OEM touch up paint (nail style brush applicator, not sprayed) and a coat of clear. It was on the underside of the gas door and its not perfect but the rust bubbles are gone and it not visible really anymore, so I'm happy.
