Volvo S40 2000 - Hangs when starting, then starts

Post by [email protected] »

I DO NOT KNOW WHAT IS HAPPENING, BUT WHEN I START THE CAR IN THE MORNING, AFTER PRESSING A COUPLE OF TIMES ON THE ACCELERATOR BEFORE TURNING THE KEY THE CAR STARTS IMMEDIATELY.

LATER IN THE DAY AT LUNCH, GOING HOME AFTER WORK I TRY TO START IT UP AND I HAVE GREAT DIFFICULTY IN GETTING STARTED....IT HANGS AND IT SEEMS THAT THERE IS NO GAS GETTING TO THE IGNITION SYSTEM..THE STARTER GOES THROUGH HEAVY HANGING ..........SOMETIMES IT STARTS AND OTHER TIMES IT SEEMS IT FLOODS WITH GAS AND I HAVE TO WAIT A BIT BEFORE STARTING AGAIN?

ANYBODY KNOW WHAT IS THE PROBLEM? HAS ANYBODY EXPERIENCED THE SAME?

THANK YOU

Calm down dood, i can see that vein throbbing on the side of your head.

why do you have to press a couple of times on the accellerator before starting? :?:

what happens if you dont do that? :?:

can you hear any noises when you first turn the key, before the starter motor? :?:

what do you meen it hangs? & what is heavy hanging? :?:

so many questions.......

NO I DO NOT HAVE TO PRESS A COUPLE OF TIMES ITS JUST THAT I FEEL THAT PERHAPS FUEL WILL REACH THE IGNITION SYSTEM SO WHEN I TURN THE KEY TO ACTIVATE THE STARTER THE ENGINE WILL START BUT NOT THE CASE?!

IF I DO NOT DO THAT YOU JUST HEAR THE STARTER WINDING AND WINDING AND NOTHING HAPENS UNTIL YOU PRESS THE ACCELERATOR.

NO, THERE ARE NO NOISES BEFORE THE STARTER MOTOR.

WHEN I MEAN HANG, I MEAN THE STARTER MOTOR HANGS WITH NO REAL IGNITION TAKING PLACE THEREFORE NO STARTING OF THE ENGINE.

YOU ALMOST HAVE TO ACTIVATE THE STARTER MOTOR AND THEN PRESS UNTIL THE GAS COMES TOGETHER AND THEN IT THE ENGINE STARTS, HOWEVER ITS HIT OR MISS..NOTHING LIKE I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED WITH ANY CAR AND I HAVE OWNED OTHER VOLVOS.......SO I AM VERY FRUSTRATED TRYING TO FIND A SOLUTION TO THIS SITUATION?

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR HELP AND I APPRECIATE THE HELP?

sounds perhaps like your fuel pump is faulty, and not priming before you turn the ignition key,

pressing the accellorator pedal before turning the key will make no difference to a modern Electronically controlled engine.

all i can suggesst is that you first check your fuel filter for blockages & replace , then check the fuel pump for correct opperation

before you replace that, you may have to bite the bullet, & get some engine managment diagnostics done,

Do you not get any warning light? on you dash?

Thank you.

Where is the fuel filter & fuel pump located and how much money do the these parts cost approximately?

The poor starter motor is taking a beating

sorry, dont know answer to any of these questions as i havnt had mine for long, and dont have the Book Of Lies yet,

but,.... i listened to mine this morning & there is a definite wirring noise as soon as you turn the ignition key, before the starter motor kicks in, This is the noise that the pump shuold make when it pressurises the fuel system, if yours isnt doing this then it must be pump related.

check your fuses (in the fuse panel ~ this happened on my 480 once, although that wouldnt fire up at all untill i replaced the fuse) & wiring that connects to the fuel pump

good luck at let us know how you get on

now that we have a couple of more years of experience with these cars I think it is obvious that this was the fuel pressure regulator, happens on almost all of them with time
