2002 S60 coil replacement - can do?

Post by vooman »

My 2002 s60 was running fine, until the other day. At idle it was running real rough, like a cylinder was out of commission, above 35 it smoothed out. The message panel was advising to shift up or shift down, and the check engine light was blinking.

I take it into a Volvo garage, he hooks it up to vadis and tells me a coil is dead, and other will probably fail soon. He'll fix the one for $180. But he's swamped and can't take it in today.

We're moving so $$$ is a bit tight. A quick search shows that a Bosch coil runs about $55 - I assume that's the part. Is this something I can do myself? Since I'm between homes all my tools are in storage - are any special tools needed? Can I just tell which coil is dead by pulling spark wires, or..? I've never worked on fuel injection ignition systems before, so I'm a bit new to this. But if I can save $100 that would be great.

Thanks for any assist.

This guy did the spark plug too, imo this is optional but might be a good idea

You will need to take it to autozone or something to have someone read the DTC, this is how you'll figure out which coil needs replacement. Cylinder 1 is the one all the way on the right side of the engine (left if you are standing in front of the car facing it) FYI

Looks like I'll need to buy a few tools I already have, but can't access. Oh well, that's what Harbor Freight is for!

Thanks!
