exhaust mods, though cheaper???

How to go faster, stop quicker, and turn harder. Chips, exhaust, larger turbos, bigger/slotted/drilled rotors, high performance brake pads, manual boost controllers, performance shocks/struts/springs, airbox mods and more! Also discussion on HID and Xenon lights, aftermarket foglights and other exterior lighting.

exhaust mods, though cheaper???

Post by Roger »

Is there a way to lessen the restriction on these exhaust for the guy who doesn't have $1000 to $1500 laying around???
my thoughts, why not a van or truck cat, would they be less restrictive?
elimiate the baffle thing, or what ever it is between the cat and muffler.
then one of those muffler that have two exhaust pipe, only 2in. opening or so, so is not to wake up the whole neignborhood when going down the road? Oh, 89 turbo family wagon, oh yeah, I did that little thing with the fish tank air control valve in line on the waste gate vaccumm line, I did notice the turbo working what seems to be quicker, sooner and harder.
now where is the screw to maybe turn up the boost some, but ofcourse back to the cheap way of opening up the exhaust, to me it feel like no matter how much I turn up the boost, I still need a cheap way to exhaust it.

Your ideas are good but maybe not totally accurate. Don't be tricked into thinking that any exhaust component that is larger or from a "truck" will flow better, the truth is that this is often false. To reduce the exhaust restriction in a B230FT engine the common solution is to use a 3" system including a high flow catalytic converter from someplace like Summitt racing (cost about $130-$140) and a straight through performance muffler like the DynoMax UltraFlow. Join all these components with 3" mandral bent pipe.

If you have the skill and tools you can easily build a complete system from the turbo to tailpipe yourself for less than $400. The catch is if you cannot weld the labour could cost almost as much as the parts. I know that MVP once offered an excellent 3" system, check them out http://www.mvpvolvo.com/
