1996 Volvo 850 Alarm system died

Post by FinnoSwede »

Dearest volvoers:

I am now coming at you with yet another little fidgety problem: My alarm system quit (in gradual steps).

I will describe as detailed as possible the sequence of events:

1) My alarm was working fine until...

2) Suddenly one day the remote wouldn't work. I reprogrammed it (turning the key on and off 5 times and following that whole procedure) and it worked again.

3) Step 2) repeated itself a couple of times.

4) After a while, even though I would be able to get the alarm to reprogram itself (with the 5-time-key-turning procedure), it wouldn't "remember" the remotes.

5) A few days ago I tried to reprogram once again but now the alarm is simply dead. The procedure for reprogramming it doesn't work and the LED is not even blinking.

I am assuming I have a dead alarm control unit (121 and 122 under the steering wheel assy. - or something like that).

I am at this point open to other suggestions. I am leaning towards changing the alarm control unit. What do you guys think? Any other ideas/things to check for?

Thanks a billion!

Sounds to me like you have it figured out. Either that control unit or a relay.

Hi! Thanks for the reply. What relays should I look for, and where are they?

Thanks!
