A very strange problem indeed

Post by RossT »

Hi All, Firstly as I am new to these forums please accept my apologies if I have accidentally posted in a wrong area.

My lovely 940 developed an interesting problem yesterday - it died, presenting all the symptoms of having run out of fuel, but.....

1) I am getting fuel through to the cylinders
2) I have a spark
3) I am getting air to the mix
4) The fuel pump activates prior to cranking over - that bit is working, I can hear it as it builds pressure
5) All the timing marks line up...I know - I have changed the timing belt today (that was on the to-do list).
Generally all the mechanical parts seem to be working OK.

The engine cranks over happily but refuses to catch.
Since the car died I have none of the ususal dashboard warning lights at all.

I have flipped the tops off the relevant 2 relays (on the LHS of the relay tray) and they seem to be working fine...I think. They click when the ignition is turned.

If the problem is purely mechanical, why don't the warning lights show when the ignition is in the second position?
I'm guessing that one of the sensors may have died....but which one?

anybody got any ideas?

Could you please let us know what compression numbers you are getting.

I don't have access to a compresssion tester right now, but the compression seems to be fiarly good...I can feel it as I crank the engine by hand.

Well, in a moment of desperation, me any my buddy took the rocker cover off to see what is going on inthere....just to make sure that the cam shaft is correctly aligned - it isn't. It is quite a long way off the timing marks. We immediately took the cam shaft pulley off and discovered that the locating peg has sheared.....maybe the problem is one step closer to being fixed.
The only other problem is where can I get a replacement peg from at 19:30 hrs on a public holiday? I guess that a cut off peice of drill shank will have to do the job in the short term.

Fingers crossed.

So, timing is important :-)

Yours is an interference type engine, yes? Check compression and let's hope you did not bend any valves... Good luck!
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.
Disclaimer: We (very) seldom do that

Yikes I second regent's post. But I am concerned about why the peg sheard off. Did you replace the timing belt before the other problem? I suppose that if the timing were off, and a valve hit a piston, it could shear the peg instead of killing a valve...

Those don't shear off for no reason...
