Wow. That's the highest dealer quote I've heard for any repair.

If these are anything like the pre 2008 systems they can be disconnected to make the car FWD before you spend your hard earned cash.

As this failure is rare on later cars I would be looking at finding a used unit with low mileage. This may take a while and many calls to locate but if you can get by without AWD during these warmer months you will save substantially.

Perhaps another member can chime in about the compatibility of earlier models. This would increase your chances of finding one quicker and possibly much cheaper.

Don't put too much weight on this comment, BUT, I think the late model AWD system can't be safely disconnected and run as FWD. The later model AWD system is similar to Subaru (Haldex??) and will self-destruct basically everything. You're really getting screwed here I think.

What year is your car? Your profile say 2001, but your thread says 2010. Big difference. Either way, sounds like a ripoff. $10,000???

So to put an end to all the speculation; what year IS the car?

Well the car will need to be repaired without disconnecting the final drive. Check in your area for independant Volvo repairers and call around. There's no doubting you'll save a lot of dollars by going indie. I'll check out some part numbers this evening to see the cost. This is a very interesting situation.
