MAJOR MYSTERIOUS TRANNY PROBLEM

Post by milkman »

ok i'll drive for alittle while and the car runs fine then all of a sudden the car will go into neutral and wont give me any forward or reverse gears

stop the car turn it off let it sit for ten minutes and you get your gears back then go drive for a couple of minutes and you loose your gears again

dealer said they don't know, they just told me i need a brand new tranny

anyone ever here of this?

i have a 1999 S70 T5, great car

This is a forum for ETM problems..... Electronic Throttle Modules .... NOT transmissions.

OK, but it sure doesn't sound like anything an ETM would influence? How/why would an ETM cause it to slip into Neutral? I realize the error codes (trouble trees) are complicated and may confound one another, but this is very far from the "safe" mode they boast.

Also, who would ever imagine the dealer could be wrong in diagnosing a transmission failure?

Do you know how hard that was to say with a straight face?

That said, I would demand a GUARANTEE that if a new transmission didn't fix it, there would be NO CHARGE. ETMs are a grand, Xmissions are 6.

ETM's work in conjunction with a TPS (throttle position sensor). As different RPM's are sensed correctly they change into different gears...at least that's my understanding. If the ETM is not working properly, sending the wrong signal to the TPS, I could see how a car could switch gears. Anyway, you're probably right but thought I would throw that out there. If I'm wrong, someone correct me. I'm not really up on the cars with ETM's.

Me neither at this point, but to my mind, "changing gears" is altogether a different animal than "popping into neutral".

I shall defer to any experts out there.

I don't really read what was said as "popping into neutral." More like shifted into neutral. I think we're talking about an automatic tranny here, but "popping into" sounds so much like a manual tranny. Now that would freak me out too if the gear shift changed location. But I'm with you Bud...just know that strange things happen when the ETM is bad and it's involved, but like I said earlier, I could be completely off the mark on this one.
