'95 850 Cruise Control points of failure?

The vac pump is under the battery tray - the control unit is the large 'double relay' black box inside the fuses area. It has 'CRUISE CONTROL' printed on the side in large letters.

It is under the fuse box cover (4x T25 torx head screws) and it is "relay" 101/102. The pump itself is located under the battery tray. The Mode 2 diagnostics on a '95 are amazing - you can test all of the switches but it takes an assistant to actuate the controls and then write down the codes. If it turns out to be a bad module let me know, I can send you one.

Well, I was at the yard picking up a door latch for my daughter's S70 so I grabbed a control. It did NOT have Cruise Control on it but I did check my '95 PDF and figured out where it was. They charged me $20 for both parts so I figured what the heck.

It did NOT fix my problem, not to say it was good. My next step is to check vacuum on the connections at the throttle pedal and at the unit under the battery trey. If those vacuum lines are good I'm going to try the OBD-I port proceedures in the PDF. I don't understand the use of my ohm meter much but if I read the proceedures like 100 times it may sink in. At least I can give it a try, I don't like not having cruise.

What's the odds of the ignition being my problem?

This doesn't even make sense. The first thing I did was feel and look at the vacuum lines at the cruise pump on the bottom of the battery trey. They looked great. So I decided that I would go through the trouble shooting steps in the 850 PDF for the cruise. I read through it and the next step I decided to take was to check the accelerator pedal vacuum ball and the vacuum line there. As soon as I dropped the kick panel and looked at it I seen my problem. The linkage to the vacuum ball from the top of the accelerator pedal was disconnected. It has a linkage similar to the throttle body linkage and it was loose. When I snapped it in place it seemed worn like it would come loose easy and sure nuf it did. So I got some wire ties and supported it with that. Took the car around the block and it set and held 33 mph like it had to.

What I don't understand is, why would my cruise work at all with that disconnected? It has a swivel at the connection and what seems like a micro switch that makes a ground when you let off the gas. So the connection cuts the system off like the brake switch does. When the gas pedal is pressed the connection is lost and the cruise will set. What I don't understand is... why did my cruise work at all with that disconnected? Maybe there was certain times that it was making connection or my system has a problem that the pedal was not cutting it off. Maybe the control relay had something to do with it but I'm up and running again.

Another example of how reliable the components are. Bad vacuum like or linkage can cause it not to work and the other things that cost money work.

This document is great, but I have a 98 S70 GLT. Is there a version available for my vehicle? I looked under downloads, but did not see anything that would be the obvious equivalent for my car. Thanks for your help.

Having the same problem here, intermittant cruise control failure - more not working than working. Come to think of it no function lately. Stopped trying to use it some time ago.
Will certainly check mentioned problem points.

If for instance the problem is vacuum related, will that also affect engine performance with the cruise switch turned on? Like if you have a leak in turbo hoses to tcv or otherwise sucking in unmeasured air?

No, you can jump the relay to see if the pump is bad or if there is a vacuum leak.

Mine is not working again and this time it's either the cluster or a wire going from the cluster to the control relay. The cluster actually sends the speed signal to the control unit, then the signal goes to the ECU. My speed meter works but the cluster is NOT sending the speed signal to the control unit. Mine is a '95 but a '96 will not work with the cluster unplugged as well.

Is this how the vacuum hoses are supposed to be routed for the cruise control pump? All the hoses look and feel good and the connections are factory tight.

I love this website.
It was also the brake switch on my '95 850. I glued a 4mm piece of plastic to the switcth. Between it and the pedal. Now it works fine.

Mine is working again. Had a bad wire between the cluster and control unit at the connector on top of the cluster.
