t-belt cover

Post by mrscullini »

i'm in the process of a valve job, t-belt replacement, etc. during removal of the head, the rear (attached to block) t-belt cover cracked. i figure since i am in there, i might as well replace it. i can't seem to find a replacement. can someone direct me to a source for this component?

If you mean the upper timing belt cover that is attached to the head, eEuuroparts has it for $20.31 OEM.

Try the link, or go to their site and search.
Good luck.

turns out not the part i needed, this was the lower timing cover for a '98. i need the lower timing cover for a 2000 v70xc (cvvt). can't seem to find it anywhere. ipd doesn't have, checking with fcp and eeuroparts. any thoughts? seems to be a rare part as a replacement.

mine cracked while pulling the head and waterpump and i am hesitant to reuse it. hate to have it crack further only to damage the t-belt.

You can get it either through the dealer or, if you are lucky, through a junk yard.

My old cover is in pretty bad shape too, it has cuts in the front where the timing belt tried to eat through it but the one that came with the replacement engine was completely smashed. I looked it up a week or so ago and I seem to recall that it was in the mid $40.00 range for a replacement from the dealer.

Once I heard plastic cracking, I figured this piece was done for, so I got a little heavy-handed with it. I'm sure it's gonna be a joy putting the new one in.

BTW, the DW price is killer. Wish I would have seen this thread before I ordered (a new inner timing gear casing).

It is a lot easier to scrape off the old water pump gasket with this thing removed. Too bad I broke it. I feel better knowing I'm not the only one at least. The water pump just didn't want to come out.

Does anyone know how the coolant rail behind the water pump pulls out? Just yank on it? Or what?

I changed my timing gear the week before last while replacing my valve stem seals, and my inner lower cover was cracked too. While I was cleaning it, I broke it the rest of the way.

I opted to splice the two halves together by riveting in a small piece of aluminum bar stock spanning the crack, strategically placed so that the bar nestles up against the plastic stiffening rib far away from any moving parts, and the rivets don't prevent the cover from fitting up snugly against the engine block. The repaired cover is quite rigid and strong.

After I installed it, I did have some momentary misgivings when I realized that if the rivets failed, the aluminum piece could cause havoc by bouncing around in the timing gear. There is not much stress on it once it is installed, because the timing cover itself is bolted to the block on each of the halves, so I opted to leave it in. I don't think failing rivets are going to be a problem.

In any case, I plan to take a peek at it at every oil change....
