coolant dissapers and then reappears in resivoir 2001 v70xc

Post by baldyjones »

After driving my volvo2001v70xc for 30 minutes the low coolant light comes on- the coolant is at min mark. If i slowly let pressure out of resivvoir the coolant rises back up to max mark. I also have bubbles coming out the small hose in the top of the resivoir if I temporarily overfill to cover small hose. Is extra pressure in the resivoir forcing down the coolant and is the cause a head gasket? No water in oil. Thanks

You need to check the coolant when it is cold. Fill to the Max Line and see if the Low Coolant Light comes on. If your coolant level is not at the correct level when cold as you the drive the extra air in the expansion tank will expand and push the coolant level to the Min mark and the light will come on. When you let out the pressure at that time the Hot coolant will go further up and give you a false reading as to where it is suppose to be when it is cold.

Sounds like you need to burp the system. Get some premixed coolant and fill to full when cold. Remove expansion tank cap and with heater on full start car and let it run for 15-20 mins. Allow to cool top up expansion tank.
Check level again after a week and it necessary top up.

Thanks guys, Right now the coolant is staying at the max mark after a drive up and down the mountain I live on. The sensor light is working correctly. I will see if it remains stable. Also is it normal for the temp gauge to never go above exactly straight up, It goes to far left when coo land never goes above 1/2 way.

When the coolant is at the Max Level Mark when cold it should still remain be at Max Level Mark when warm if the cooling system has no issues. What did you do as it seems to OK now? The Needle on the gauge should remain at 3 o'clock under normal driving conditions and circumstances.

So far so good.... I ran the heater on full blast driving up the hill.I Just went on another 30 min drive and it is still at max. line in resivoir. My temp needle is at 12 0'clock , never past, when it stops. Thanks for your input guys! Rocky mentioned heater! Thanks again, if this works it's better than the head gasket I was afraid of.

Good news! Another way to know if there is air in the system is when the heater's output is low or erratic. You can also get a waterfall sound when starting up.
