ignition key and floor shift woes

Post by shu45 »

We have a 2004 XC-90, and have developed an interesting problem. We are unable to remove our key from the ignition, we can't even turn it completely off to save the battery from draining. ADDITIONally, the floor shifter only moves from Neutral to Drive. We cannot shift it up into park so we would be able to remove the key. I thinking this is a bit over my head, any thoughts? Shu45

Can't you use the manual override? First off. I'd try giving the ECU a hard reset, pull the battery, hit the brake lights, wait 30 or so seconds. Then plug it back in, sometimes computers think they're smarter, yet they're not.
Speed has never killed anyone, suddenly becoming stationary... That's what gets you.

I am not familiar with a 'manual overide'. Please explain, before I disconnect the battery. Shu45

pull the cover off from around the shifter. Look for a broken yellow cap on the lower left. If you can move that cable attached there, you can shift to park.
