Tutorial: Volvo OEM Shim Install Fixes Squeaky Brakes

I pulled the shims out today!

During a routine inspection during the scheduled maintenance I found that a rear brake pad had broken a large chunk off the the brake material.

I purchased the NAPA premium ceramic pad that came with their own unique shim design ($51). I have stock rotors that are within spec and are in very good shape. The brake job was finished in 35 minutes including cleanup. I did not purge the old fluid as the car is well within the time frame of the last purge/bleeding. If i experiance any adverse effects with the NAPA pads I will update the post.

Just as a FYI: I have used the NAPA ceramic on other vehicles and had very good results. With the ceramic I have had quiet operation with less brake dust and better stopping.

Following advice on this web site, I puchased and installed a shim kit (Volvo part # 272272) and a Mounting Kit (Volvo part # 217831) and the sqealing dissapeared. I noticed that the springs were much stronger than the old ones. I installed the shims with the arrows up (no instructions with shims). When I re-read Matthew's web site instructions today, I noticed that the other fellow installed with the arrows down. Oh well.

By the way. This Tutorial is incorrect when it talks about the SHIMS.

The shims have arrows. The arrows should be facing the way the rotation of the rotor/wheel is going. The shims part should be on the trailing end of the pad.

Sooooo... it should be at the top part of the pad not the bottom like the picture shows. (Arrows pointing UP!)

+1 arrows pointing UP!
also, this helps to reduce the vibration.
I did this to my pads, and the insane vibration felt upon braking has been stopped.

Is the procedure and the shim kit the same for the FRONT as it is in the rear pads

850's do not have shims on the front.

To me, brake shims are a thing of the past.
We have a few cars at home, whenever I see shims in the kit, I throw them away.
The way to get rid of squealing noise:
- Buy good brake pads (search car forum for experience from members)
- Use a bit of "anti-squeal" compound and apply a little bit around the caliper's piston circle (where it meets the pads).
This gets rids of all squeal.
- At the next pad change, remove old anti-squeal compound and re-apply new compound.

1. Is the mounting kit just the hardware that holds the pads in place? $19 on Tasca is pretty pricey.
2. Do the two kits (shims and mounting) both include parts for both sides of the car?
3. If you buy the OEM rear brake pad kit, does it come with shims? I assume it would

I found a link which showed the arrows down. My 96 950 right rear were squealing when backing down our sloping driveway.
I had installed the shims previously with the arrows pointing in direction of forward wheel rotation i.e. arrows up.
This link (https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/brake ... ing-noise/) shows the shims being installed with the arrows down. I am going to switch to this orientation and see if it improve. Then I will report back with the results. I tried to google the Volvo part number Volvo Brake Pad Set Shim Set - Genuine Volvo 272272 to see if the factory's TSB was available and what it said but had no luck finding it.
