Shifting problems

What could be preventing my floor shift (XC-90) from moving up to Park or Reverse. The shifter is only moving between Neutral and Drive, but seems to be locked out of the rest. I can put the vehicle in Neutral and start the engine, but I am not able to shift it into Park, so I may remove my keys. And of course, since I cannot get my keys to a position where they can be removed, my battery if continually drained. We love our Volvo, please help us. Thank you for taking time to read this post. There is a small serviceable armature on the shifter assembly. Remove the cover surrounding the shifter and look for a yellow cap on the lower left side. It usually breaks. If not the knob its self could be faulty.
