1999 V70 Oil change and OEM alloy rims

Post by daveojr77 »

OK, so now that Ive taken care of the ETM problem, I need to change the oil in the car. Ive seen a few people talk about what specific oil and filters to use on other models, but I need your opinions on what oil and filter to use on my 1999 V70.

Also I need to get tires, yet i want to visit the local junkyard to see if I can find the stock alloy rims for this car. Am I limited to use the original 15" rims or can I use the 16" without any problems. Thanks in advance.

The 16" stock rims will work fine.

Safest oil filter is Mann, which is the OEM filter. Any decent quality filter that has an internal check valve will suffice, but you won't find one that's cheaper than the Mann. FCP has them for $5.25, I think. $42 for a case of ten.

Fram are known as the Orange Can of Death. Don't touch 'em unless you're looking for an excuse to do an engine swap.

The '99 is a bit of a different animal and there is no check valve in the filter itself. Out of habit I buy Mann or Mahle since they are OEM.

Granted they are trying to sell their product but this is an interesting video.

filter: make sure your type. 99 model either came with spin on or paper filter.
oil: Mobil 1 5w-30 is fine.

Can't go wrong with the Mann. The K&N are also popular, and can be cleaned and reused.

Consensus seems to be, avoid the local store brands. Although they're easy to replace again, and cheap enough, it's still questioned whether they filter sufficiently small particles.

I use Mobil 1 5w30, Mobil1 or K&N oil filter and a drop in K&N air filter. I'll only order the Mann oil filter if I'm ordering other parts...unless you want to fork out the money for a case.

NAPA Gold filters have good reviews and filter material from almost everywhere I've read (made by Wix). I've used them on both the S70 and Cruze - they make both the spin-on filters and cartridges.

They're $6-8 each, though, so the OEM one from an online vendor is probably cheaper.

very interesting. I watched the video comparing the Mahle filter against the "orange filter of death".

I inherited two Fram filters, when I bought my car a few days ago, but after looking around what people think of the Fram's I'm going to reconsider using them for my car. They might look good as Halloween decoration, since that's around the corner.
New to Volvo, already liking it. Hoping to keep it in good shape, not like the previous Benz 190e

Repairs so far: tie rods, outer CV Boot, air control flap, control rod, ABS module, various seals, motor mount
