2004 XC 90 Timing belt

Post by Bethesdavolvo »

I've been told by the dealer that I will need a new timing belt at 120K miles and that it costs $1000. Does that sounds right? I am not in a position to do it myself. I live in the Washington, DC area and things are pricey here, but that sounds ridiculous.

That is spot on for a dealer. They usually mark things right up including their labour.

The timing kits can be bought in OEM blue boxes from our site sponsor dealers on the banners above for around $160 and worse case scenario is that you also require a water pump (Aisin brand for around $90) and acccessory belt & tensioner for around $100 for both) Labour goes by book value for the job so this can vary from b/w 1.5 and 2.5 hours depending on how much of the above is required.

If I were you I would call them and find out exactly which parts the $1000 was covering. If parts total is $350-$400 maximum as above then they are billing around $225-250/hr and that's pretty steep!!

Tell them you'll bring your own blue box parts and see how many hours they want to bill for. (yes they'll threaten that if they're the wrong parts it will hold up the job but you can first buy them and bring them in. Then they can run your VIN to be sure they're correct before booking the job in) If they can't/won't negotiate with you find a good independant shop who will probably reduce this bill to around $650 all up or less if only some of the above is required.

Call them and ask the important questions. If you would like to PM your VIN I can tell you which parts suit but I can tell you that for your vehicle there aren't many variations except whether it's a T6 or a 2.5

Keep us informed and feel free to post the dealer's name. How many miles on your vehicle? We have a independant repairer section here at Matthews where you can find an indy workshop hopefully in your area.

Might want to check your local Volvo indy shop.
Live in pricey San Francisco, Volvo indy shop replaced my 04 XC90 T6 timing belt, idler pulley, tensioner, water pump, thermostat housing with metal fitting, accessory belt, tensioner and coolant. Labor cost $450.
Purchased all Volvo parts online around $500.
If you have T6 have new GMB timing belt tensioner and new GMB idler pulley will sell for $20 shipping included, went with Volvo instead of aftermarket parts.

Thanks. It is the standard 2.5 engine; 113K miles, so I'm trying to do the research before the 120K mark when it needs to be replaced.
I will look for an independent repair shop.

My local dealer charges $650-$675 for t-belt, tensioner and pulley, dropping it off tomorrow after work. Strangely, local independant Volvo shop wanted $800.
