the cam sprockets were the same way when i started. i couldn't find the crank alignment notches until afterwards. also, after fighting the timing belt on, the cam sprockets would get bumped out of alignment once or twice, but then i fixed them.
and yeah, the bolts make a triangle facing down and a perfectly inverted triangle facing up.
Timing marks off!

Bumping the cm sprockets around is fine, that happens to me all the time. Especially that exhaust cam. It is especially fine if the crank is on the mark.

yeah, it was a t-belt/water pump replacement. the cams seemed to jerk, but rotate freely when i was trying to realign them beforehand. i was using a 30mm and a breaker bar. it would move the normal amount, but then there definitely was considerably more resistance than normal when i got a quarter turn in.

Am I reading correct in that you were unable to verify all three marks at the same time?
If thats the case then yes you are probably off. There is a "stop hole" that you can use to get to the mark as well. You have to remove the starter motor, then an allen plug that's in the block. Insert a 6" (or longer) long 3/8" socket extenstion into the hole then rotate the motor counter clockwise. The crank will stop on the correct timing mark. Once you've done this, check your cam marks are lined up.
If your timing was off, your valves are most likely fine, so don't worry too much about that. One, two or even three teeth off usually won't cause valve contact if you are turning it over by hand though.

I was looking at online tutorials, and have discovered that I was using the wrong thing to align my crankshaft, so that's the culprit here. however, i was slowly rotating it as far as it could go in both directions, looking for the notch you have to align it with, and could not find it. is there any advice anyone could offer?

All right,
We are here to help you but....
- You started many threads on the TB issue.
- There are tons of DIYs in forum, do you at least read them?
Or we have to read them for you?

I have. I've been going back and forth between 2 of the tutorials, a tutorial on another site, and VIDA. They don't address this specific issue, though. And i tried going off book before and was trying to get the crankshaft bolt off after taking the timing belt off, which was a big mistake, so I'm pretty apprehensive about doing things blindly.
If there's a DIY in the forum that addresses this that you know, I'd be glad to read it.

I read all of those and unfortunately they don't address the issue my car has.
I can only turn the crankshaft maybe a quarter of a full rotation, and i looked very closely with a flashlight over that range of motion. I did not see any notches, and I've tried going back and forth 3 or 4 times now. I can only assume that the notch is somehow outside of that section. I'm wondering how I'd be able to get to that, as I can't move it past the quarter turn and if I take the timing belt off, I should not be rotating the crankshaft.
