Over the last few days my v70XC engine will shut down while driving. It is very random, the engine is running fine, no misfires, cranks perfect but at a whim it will shut down. Once instance was at 65MPH, dash warning lights do not come on immediately. They do come on when the car is at a complete stop. When this occurs, I stop the car, place in park and it cranks up immediately as if nothing happened. The other day i traveled 200 miles and it happened twice. In both cases the instance occurred within 5 minutes of run time. Once the car is running it ran perfect for the duration of the trip, (1.5 hours). Yesterday in city traffic it was fine. I pulled into a parking lot and it shut down again. Coasted into a parking space. Put the car in park, and it cranked right away. Drove the car back home with no issues.
1) Would the gear shift position sensor cause this issue?
2) Could the issue be with the CPU?
3) Could it be wiring a short of some sort?
No error codes, no check engine light.
Really baffled!
Any ideas or recommendations will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Tom

I believe this may be the early signs of a fuel pump relay failing.
Here's where to find it.

I appreciate the quick response. Since the original post I pulled the center console and tested to see if the gear shift sensor would cause the problem and it does not cause the engine to shut down if you depress the sensor while in the "D" position.
So I was under the hood checking the fuse box, wiring etc for any possible shorts and the engine shut of while I was looking around. At the time it shut down I could hear a faint electrical spark, (shorting) sound for just a second. The engine powered down, no misfires etc. I immediately tried to crank the car and i cranked perfectly and ran for several minutes then I turned off the car.
Would the failing fuel pump relay cause the engine to die down with out any signs of misfiring etc?
Thanks,
Tom

Yes. Without fuel being forced through the injectors by the pump, the engine will just starve and shut off.
Carbureted engines will run for a little bit off the fuel in the bowl of the carburetor before leaning out and dying.
Is it predictable at all? You can try a paper clip in place of the relay to see if it still shuts off between pins 15 and 87 (87a if its one of the later relays).

I have located a view sources for fuel pump relays. Have you any experience ordering in the relays? Prices are ranging around $40. I guess it will be a process of elimination.
