2001 V70 fuel leak

Post by Krueg »

Gasoline smell is coming from wife's '01 V70. It occurs all the time, not just when filling the tank. Smell is strongest around the tank. It's been hot here and much gas has been evaporating (getting expensive). If car has sat for a while it turns over for a while before firing up.

I looked under the car and the gas looks to be coming from the top of the fuel tank somewhere on the passenger side. Are the fittings or fuel lines prone to this sort of thing. How do I gain access to the top of the tank to inspect it without dropping the tank? Is it even possible?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Sounds like an evaporator valve leak. Not sure of the specifics for the '01 although it is not uncommon with earlier 850's. Others will give you their input but have it checked out as soon as possible. Do you have a check engine light on?

Check engine light is on only sometimes. It will then turn off by itself.

The your ECU may be reading this as a temporary problem...when gas is full, it sets a light...when gas goes down, no leak and no setting of light. The code(s) should still be stored in the ECU....go get it/them read at AutoZone with a scan tool and report back what the code(s) is/are...would be much easier to help knowing the specific code(s).

Hmmmmm is right...very strange.
Guess next is a visual inspection of the area you smell the fumes.
If you don't know anything about this area, then I would suggest the dealer or a good indy who deals with Volvo's a lot.
