Austin to San Antonio, 850R Oil Trap/PCV task

Post by byeboy »

Howdy! I am in Canyon Lake, right between Austin and San Antonio, (15 miles NW of New Braunfels, 25 miles south of Wimberley). I am about to do my Oil Trap/PCV on my 1997 850R (164,000 miles). I have gathered all Genuine Volvo parts (trap, hoses, intake gasket). I have a good assortment of tools. We would work outside, in my driveway.
Looking for 'Moral Support' , and perhaps some sage advice from fellow Volvo owner when I dive into this this coming Thursday (or...what's your schedule? 'could move it to the weekend, etc.) January 26, 2011. (moved it out two days because of rain...hasn't rained in weeks...but just plan on doing something outdoors, and Sheeze!).
Of course, I will return the favor, and help with your repair/project.
I am a Metal Artist, and perhaps could return the favor by doing some minor welding for you? I am also considering painting the car this spring, so same deal there..help me, then I help you...I may set my garage up as a Ghetto Booth, but need to do a HUGE amount of clean-out needed to get a car in there (which is why I'm doing the Oil Trap outside).

I'll be watching replies on-and-off through the next couple days, but my email is the best way to get me...

How do I edit to delete most of this post (I see no "edit" or "Delete" button)? (I did the job today, but will still "raise my hand" to assist others in my area with their Volvo repairs/maintenance).

How's it going, Guys? I need to do the pcv system cleanup in my Volvo V70 GLT 1998. I just read the wonderful Tutorial Justin wrote and I printed it. I like to work on cars and with my hands in general, but I feel daunted by the whole intricate procedure. I bought my Volvo in Dec. 2010 and it has been good, except that it does not start when the weather is cold, under 70 degrees unless I erase the codes, then it always starts. I will change the starter relay next to see if that takes care of it. But the underlying issue is that positive pressure Justin described, with the blue smoke coming out the tailpipe and the oil getting under the spark plug cover. I have reason to mistrust mechanics, not just for mere greediness but because at least two of them have fixed something and unfixed something else hoping I would return soon. Let me know if you are able to lend moral support in person and perhaps an extra hand. I live in the NE San Antonio, not far from I35 and 410. Thank you very much.

Wait a minute. What is the start problem? I can't tell if you mean no cranking over or cranks over but does not start.

I can't say anything about the starter issue, but I'm getting ready to replace the PCV system and clean the injectors/EGR/throttle body on my '95 850 Turbo. Wouldn't mind having an extra hand or lending an extra hand, or both. Maybe there's some experience from one project that will transfer to the other.

Disclaimer: I'm a noob as well. Taking this car to Stage 0 has been an adventure. It ain't over yet. :-)
