reduced engine performance warning light

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

reduced engine performance warning light

Post by sdl92 »

I have a 2004 S80 2.9l T6 FWD with 232k. Recently the reduced engine performance light came on, the car lost power and I pulled to the side of the road. the engine slowed to idle and did not stop. With the car in park, fully depressing the accelerator, the engine revved to just under 2,000 rpm, and ran very rough. I shut the car off, waited about one minute, re-started the car, the warning light was gone, and the car ran fine the rest of the way home. I have recently replaced the fuel pressure regulator, and the fuel filter in an effort to try to cure a hard starting problem. No luck. Someone suggested that the crank position sensor may bad, and that if the fuel pump were the problem, most likely the car would not run at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Finally took my car to Glasgow Automotive in St Paul, Mn where they work on Volvo's exclusively and have the VIDA scanning equipment. They said it was either the mass air flow sensor or the ETM. Since the sensor was an easy fix I tried that first. Unfortunately it did not fix the problem, so I am going to have to replace the ETM.

I'm surprised that even using VIDA they couldn't isolate the issue between being MAF and or ETM. Theres a series of things you can do to check the MAF. The simplest one being driving the car with it disconnected and note any change. You can also drive the car and log the MAF readings, you dont even need VIDA to do this.
I know not every problem is the same and sometimes they can be hard to isolate, but I'm surprised they had you throw a MAF sensor at it without doing one of these first.
Of course if they didnt charge you for the MAF then happy days :)

They should be able to verify the state of the ETM with VIDA. I thought Volvo had the ETM issues worked out by '04 though. Does your existing ETM have a yellow or white label on it? Lookup xemodex if you plan replacing the ETM.
Do some searching on ETM topics though, like I say I think they had a lot of them squared away by 04. It may just be dirty as well.

I just now experiencing the same difficulty. The car is behaving exactly as described above. I unplugged the MAF sensor and the idle ran even rougher. I think its my ETM and contacted XemodeX but they don't offer a refurbishment or service on my model year which is an '03. Anyone have any ideas of what to do?

Any codes? You need to start there and drill down.

Borrow, beg or steal a scanner. Without this even the biggest guru mechanic sitting on Mt. Mechanical will find it impossible to look into his crystal ball.

These newer cars (post '95) need to be read so we can gather evidence towards a specific hypothesis of repair.

Unless the car is read you are limited to pulling coil wiring or injector wiring individually while the engine is running to detect a change in engine note. And after that it's still guesswork.

A scanner isn't "fancy" at all. We are talking 1990's tech here. I would argue as an owner of an S80, its an essential tool. Unless you want to throw parts and money at it and see what sticks.
You are shooting in the dark without getting it scanned for codes, it doesnt need to be a Volvo specific scanner, at least not to start. A lot of places will scan the codes for free, I would suggest you opt for that route, make sure you get the code numbers and we can work from there. Otherwise, its roulette with real money.

Autel EU702 will read codes in Volvo specific nomenclature and not pricey.

Geez if you have a smartfone and funds ate tight just download Torque and buy a $28 ELM 327 adaptor from eBay.
