Throttle Body Pipes - Help

Post by emm »

Hi all,

Hopefully you can help,

If you look at the attached picture i have two throttle bodies. The one on the bottom right has two pipes coming off it, which on closer inspection have two small holes going into the throttle body. However they don't appear to create a vacuum or anything.

The throttle body at the top right is doesn't have these. Could i ask what use do they provide? as i wouldn't expect volvo to put these on unless they where being used for something.

Both are from 850's, but the bottom right is from my 850 2.5 n/a 10 valve while the other is off a 20v.

One may be off a turbo and the other N/A. Or, one off a EGR car and the other Non-EGR.

Let me see if my S70 GLT has them... Nope.

I have a VVIS 20 valve manifold from an NA that didn't have EGR and the throttle body is identical to your 10 valve unit and it has that bump on the throttle plate

So my question would be if I install the one from the 20v do you think that buy not connecting the two pipes that go into then10v it will cause issues?

Mine a manual as well if that makes any different.

I have found a machine shop that will add the holes if need be.

If the pipes have hoses in them it stands to reason there will be an adverse effect. Why can't you put the good plate in the original 10V TB?

The two pipes go to the evap canister in the left front fender. At least on my '93 VVIS N/A, and I believe through '95.
I collected a few throttle bodies from the pick and pull before I did the throttle plate modification. So I became aware of some different types.

Take a look at this thread that I replied to a short time ago.
Good luck.

EDIT: After looking at that thread again, it appears that some parts have been deleted since the original posting, where the qestion was asked about those tubes from thhe OP. But you should get the idea.

Hi All,

Cheers think we are getting to the bottom of this.

The answer earlier questions the 10vs in the UK where fitted with the same throttle bodies that are found on T5's. They have a 55mm throttle body plate rather than a 65mm plate which is found outside of the EU it appears.

The two holes on the side of the throttle body go to the evap canister per Ben850's post earlier - Cheers.

http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/topic/15 ... r-install/

I have found throttle bodies with the 65mm plate and these pipe outlets but they are two expensive.

So on a side note i have now sent the throttle body away to a performance specialist who is going to drill these two holes into the throttle body for me so i can connect the pipes. This should take about a week to complete.

On a side note what does the charcoal canister do and would the car run like a bag of spanners without one?

The charcoal canister takes fuel vapours and makes them "unsmelly". It also condenses the vapours back into liquid. The system is part of the evap circuit and is monitored by sensors and eventually the ECU. There are return lines going back to the tank from the canister to complete the circuit. The 02 sensor's values in the car were specifically chosen with the evap circuit's presence in mind so it's a good idea to keep the original design.
