B5254T vs B5244T
B5254T vs B5244T
Hey guys new to the site.. I have a 1999 S70 turbo awd. Blew the motor last week. So I'm on the hunt for a replacement. I found a low milage B5244T for a good price and my car has the B5254T. So my question is what is the main difference and will it work in my car? Thanks

The 5244T is for a high pressure turbo and the 5254T is for a low pressure turbo. Assuming the CVVT arrangement is the same on both cars you should be fine using the 5244 with your low pressure turbo, you will loose a bit of horsepower due to the lower compression ratio. I wouldn't go the other way though, replacing a 5244T with a 5254T. I don't think the engine would last very long running the higher compression ratio with a high pressure turbo.

You really need to know the x number that goes with B5244T. I don't have the spec book handy but in 2000 the nomenclature changed and I think you are looking for a B5244T but not a B5244t2. The B5244T2 from 2000 was the one year HPT in the R.
Then the B5254T2 came out that was the longer stroke true 2.5 litre engine for 2003. Then there is the other 2.4 litre HPT motor that is 2.4 litres from the small bore but using the long stroke of the true 2.5 litres used 2005-2009. I think that HPT engine is the B5244T5.
They couldn't keep it simple.

From the 2000 model S70/V70 owner's manual:
Designation: Volvo B 5244 T
Output 190 hp at 5100 rpm (142 KW/85 rps)
Max torque 199 ft. lbs. at 1600-5000 rpm (270 Nm/27-83 rps)
Number of cylinders 5
Bore 3.27" (83 mm)
Stroke 3.54" (90 mm)
Displacement 2.4 liters
Compression ratio 9.0:1
Number of valves 20
From the 1999 model S70/V70 owner's manual:
Designation: Volvo B 5254 T
Output 190 hp at 5100 rpm (142 kw/85 rps)
Max torque 199 ft. lbs. at 1800-4998 rpm (270 Nm/30-83.3 rps)
Number of cylinders 5
Bore 3.27" (83 mm)
Stroke 3.54" (90 mm)
Displacement 2.4 liters
Compression ratio 9.0:1
Number of valves 20
Valve clearance Self-adjusting
Only difference I have been able to gather evidence about the difference is in the shimmed tappets on the B5244T engines (no longer hydaulic self-adjusting) and a slightly longer torque curve from 1600rpm on the B5244T. On the turbos the CVVT should be the same. On NAs CVVT began in 2000. The 2000MY manual shows that T2s and T3s were the higher powered versions with smaller bore. As far as compression ratio the pistons and crank should be the same between the B5254Ts and B5244Ts

Not a big difference in bottom end. The major bottom end changes were later. The revisions to the engines were done in phases. 99 cvvt, 2000 got the internal piston cooling oiling system replacing the jets going in via covers on back of block plus the solid tappets. 2002 got lower end revisions with revised cranks n rods and lowered friction pistons. Rings were narrowed in phases too with the 99 S80 engines getting narrowed lower friction rings (that is what I remember anyway) as those 6's had to be revised a good bit when the 6 was made into a transverse layout from its origin as a RWD engine.
Ok...the motor I'm looking to buy came out of a 2000 XC70. So will the motor work in my car? I compared the head gaskets and th B5244T has more holes for coolant so my guess is the head off my motor won't work with that block. But I'd like to have a motor I can add more boost to.

I think you had better recheck your sources about the head gasket. Part number 9135513 suits all 850s and V70s up to 2000. The heads and block will be interchangable between 1999 and 2000.
Heck I just put a '99 head on a 850 block; no problems.

Just wanting to see if the engine transplat worked? I have a similar issue with a 98 v70xc with the 5254t and looking to put a 5244t from a 2000 c70 in it. Just waiting on purchasing the engine till I can find out if it will work. Thank you
