airbag light came on and won't go off.

Post by smithee1 »

Five months ago the airbag light came on.the dealer wanted to install a new one for $1100.When I insisted he try to turn it off he was successful "with great difficulty". Now it suddenly came on again.Anyone with similar experience with a 2004 V40?
Do I need to get a new airbag.(Just before the airbag light came on,the service light came on for a couple days and then went off.
I have 74000 miles on the car and am the only owner.

Any advice??

Similar thing happened to one of our 850's...I know it's a different car but in our case, it was only corrosion on the contacts for the airbag...could be simple as that for you. Unfortunately, I don't know a way to turn off the SRS on these newer cars- seems it's a Dealer only re-set. Someone hopefully will chime in and correct me if I'm wrong.

There are so many airbags that the problem needs a bit more definition. The only area where airbag system has anything like a common issue is the side airbags in seats. The wire can get broken inside the insulation. The wire runs in the seat "hinge" area where backrest meets bottom cushion and frame and it gets moved and bent and can basically wear out. Car manufacturers never advise wire repairs on airbags, only new replacement.
If the code was for the SIPS airbag on driver's seat then that is highly likely to be your problem.
Airbag light will not self clear and go out like other systems.
Service light is in no way related.
