S-90 radiator leak UPDATE

Post by steelmaxx »

S-90 1998 coolant leak it seems to be coming from the radiator but im not sure. it has some coolant resting on the side of the radiator were the gills are but that might be blow by. the coolant on the ground is pretty much in the front middle of the engine compartment so im thinking it might be the water pump. it just happend tonight and will get a better look at it in the day. my beloved s90 didnt overheat and the warning light came on. with a flash light i didnt see any obvious leaks! any help will be appreciated, thanks. :)

this morning i went and check for the leak and it was where the hose goes into the radiator. not the hose it self but the nipple it attaches too. it was cracked about an inch long or so. now can that part be repaired or do i need a new radiator? thanks

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

If the cracked part is in metal the chances are that it can be repaired. If it is in plastic it is doubtful that a repair would be satisfactory.

Just thought I would share what happened when I went to a mechanic that was recommended from a co- worker.

They gave me a price of 840 hundred otd u.s.. What they did for this was new radiator, thermostate, water pump, timming belt and all tensioners and pullies and an oil change!
When they showed me the old thermostate it was frozen shut with maybe a little oppening.
What I need to do at a later date is the tie rod bushings both sides and the front breaks ( all they do for the bushings is press the old ones out, is this correct ?)
All in all im pretty glad cause I asked how the old belt looked he replied " we got it just in time". Although I didnt get to see it it had probably 100k on it.
The front breaks are going to cost 135 including tooling the rotors.
The tie rod bushing is going to be for both sides 250 total for both.

P.S. My average Quote for the radiator alone at two other places was 375 and 450.

That sounds about what I just paid for My Timing belt, Water pump, tension-er, thermostat, serpentine belt and the coolant. I didn't get an Oil Change. But, I figured since all they work on are Volvo's, the labor it is saving me (they were able to get it done in 4-5 hrs and do it right) it was well worth it.
