I Seem to have an oil pressure issue. Here is what happened
Yesterday I was getting a Thermostat Temp Sensor light and I was trying to get the engine up to temp to see if the thermostat itself would kick on to see if I should replace that too. I revved up the engine and got it up to temp but apparently I went too far. When I openned up the hood I could hear a high pitch whine (very high pitch). I let the engine cool down. When I went to drive it later the oil light was on. I drove it a few miles and it seemed fine at first. But after a few miles it went into limp home mode and the valves were knocking like crazy. I checked the dipstick and there is still plenty of oil. There was smoke coming out of the tube but then again it was very cold last night (15 degrees), so it could have just been warm.
Did I blow the pump?? Something more serious?? help.

I feel it was merely a coincidence that this happened when you were warming it up. When revving while in neutral the motor is under very little load and uses less fuel for any given rev range you might be in while driving.
My guess is one of the oil pan seals totally let go. To repair this you'll need an oil pan seal kit at around $20 from the dealer. There are write-ups in the repair database on the procedure which involves dropping the sump and unbolting the pan pick-up pipe to reveal some seals.
An afternoon's work if you have all the parts and sealant.

Thanks for the reply.
A couple of things. I actually had it in park when I was revving it up, and now that I think of it the oil light came on while I was revving it up, or just after I stopped. I was revving it up pretty good because it wasn't getting up to temp very easily, most likely because of the aforementioned temp sensor and thermostat. Will an oil pan seal cause a leak? I don't think there has been any leakage. Also, could it be the oil pump? God I hope not.

There are no lights for thermostat/temp sensor. Perhaps coolant level light in which case you would/should top it up???
The other possibility is a code if the car was read with a scanner. Whether park or neutral same effect on engine.
No external leaks from oil pan seal problems; just the symptoms you describe such as noisy tapping and oil light.

ok, I will drop the pan and replace the seals. As far as the lights are concerned, it was a check engine light which threw a p0116 code, which is a coolant temp sensor. Any other suggestions are appreciated.
