'93 940 Wagon, Which Transmission Do I Have?

Post by boyertoby »

Hello, I'm in need of some help. My 1993 940 Wagon has a transmission that's starting to slip in 4th gear. I crawled under, and took a pic of the plate on the tranmission, but I'm not sure what exact model I have? Under Model No, it has 03-71L, and on the other side, it has 1208. Looks like there's a big "H" listed on the serial number section.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Appears to be an AW-71 with lock up converter.

Is there any way to know for sure? Also, is there a "stronger/heavier duty" transmission to replace it with, or do I just use the same model that it came with?

The '93 940 uses the AW71 box which has, as stated above, the lock-up torque converter and overdrive. It is used on both the non-turbo and turbo models. It is a heavy duty version of the AW70 box which was used on the 240 and the 740.

The only other box in the series is the AW72 which again has the lock-up torque converter and overdrive plus a reinforced casing. This was fitted to the 940GLE with the 16 valve engine, phased out in the US after '92. The ratios in this box are different from the AW71 and it may not be a good idea to change to this.

Thanks eveyone! Sounds like I need to find an AW71 with a Lock-Up Converter. Any suggestions, or should I just start looking online?

All AW71s have the lock-up torque converter as standard. You may be lucky and pick up a used box at a breaker's yard but you will have no way of knowing of it works.

In the UK we have several gearbox re-builders who will supply, and fit if necessary, a rebuilt box with a good warranty. I would suggest finding similar in the US.
