Transmission fluid leak

Post by chuckketcham »

I took this picture (attached) underneath my 2004 XC90 2.5T after removing the plastic skid plate. Since the color of the fluid is red, I assume this is a transmission leak. Can someone help me to identify the source of the leak and how to fix it?

Thanks.

Check the clamp on the power steering pump. Place you fingers under the clamp. This hose from the reservoir is a known problem. A wider clamp to avoid cutting the hose can help.

Transmission leaks are rare. Output seals for driveshafts may be the source. If it is indeed a trans leak you may need to degrease the gearbox to check the source.

Indeed I have a power steering leak exactly where you say. I opened up the power steering reservoir and although it wasn't bone dry, no fluid registered on the dipstick either, so it was quite low. I remember about a year ago noticing that more power steering fluid was needed, so I topped it off with Volvo's power steering fluid, which is green, not red. Shouldn't the leak under the car around the gearbox also be a green color if it were also power steering fluid? Or might I have two distinct leaks?

From the picture the fluid does not look red. That angle gear is a common leaker. Volvo came up with an updated design for the vent on top of the gear. The seals leak. They have gone as far as taking it apart and modifying the case. Its not a good DIY project.
