Blower motor intermittent opertion.

Hello, Have a 1999 V70. When using air blower motor sometimes doesnt turn on for several minutes, then seems to operate intermittently . Air is cold so I know the system is working. Any suggestions to test ?

I have the same issues in my 2000 V70. The other day I closed my bonnet and it started. Sometimes if I hit the dashboard it will fire up.

To test the heater fan apply power directly to its connector and report back. It's located directly behind the glovebox.

The heater fan resistor is also a common source of problems giving the same symptoms.

I'm repairing mine today with donor parts from my '99 V70 which is now for scrap so I'll report back which item(s) fixed mine.

On the inside of the blower case, the part that has the connector on it, there are a couple of spade lugs that connect to the motor itself. The connections to the motor can overheat and cause the spade lugs to no longer make a good connection - which cause them to overheat even more - which worsens the connection even more.

Cleaning up the connections by scraping away any carbon and giving the spade lugs a squeeze with a pair of pliers will fix the lugs and the connection.

Hey Ozark Lee, You were right on. Even before removing the motor I got the fan to work by jostling that white connector.

However , after cleaning the spades twice with emery board and alcohol and squeezing the connector lightly it still would not work unless I pushed the connector sideways a bit. So I took the motor housing apart and made ( now dont laugh) a small wood wedge that pushes the connector a bit and now the motor works like a champ !

I have a jpeg of it but dont know how to attach here. Thanks for the good advice,

To post pictures drop to the area below the area below the reply box and press the Upload attachment tab. Locate the picture you want to upload with the Browse button. At that point a screen pops up that has your file system. Select the picture and press Open. The path and file name will appear in the filename box and at that point press Add the file. Once the file is added you can use your cursor in the reply box where you want it to appear.

Matt has a real nifty post with screen shots that describe the process but I can't find it.

OK, if this works attached is the wood wedge that moves the fan connector about .020 and completes the connection .

I lost patience with mine after cleaning my contacts till they were sore and I even cut the connector housing away to prove I had cleaned them. Then I used my test clips straight to the battery and still very little rotation unless pressure was placed on the connector itself. Then swapped the fan from my '99 V70 wreck into my 2000 V70 and placed a garden twig into the same position except that the plastic cover was on and placed it back in the spare car.

Precopster,

My gimmick fix only lasted one week, then the motor would operate , or not , depending on how hard a bump I hit. Then I noticed a faint smell of burning and assumed the motor was stalled and maybe shorting. So I gave up the trick fix and bought a new motor from Direct Auto online, free delivery, no tax and only $60 bucks with they say a lifetime warranty.

So , on to other things like replacing the hatch struts and Bondo repair and paint front bumper.

Buffmont Does the new motor have the fan cage attached or do you have to drill it out?

In my case not sure what to do with the V70 wreck. Tried the fan last night and still good.
