240 ignition system identification

Post by jinglevo »

My 1988 240 cranks but won't start, and it appears not to be sparking. I'm trying to figure out which ignition system it has, so that I can accurately follow the troubleshooting procedures in the Bentley guide. The catch is that while the body is 1988, the engine was replaced at some point, and I don't know whether it was replaced with a 1988 engine.

What I do know: The engine is marked B230F. There is an ignition control unit like that pictured (Bentley guide, p. 280-9) for the Volvo/Chrysler system toward the front of the engine compartment on the passenger side. There is also an engine control unit like that pictured (p. 280-11) for the EZ-116K system under the glove compartment. I have two copies of the ECU, one marked Bosch/Jetronic 0-280-000-554 (installed) and the other Bosch/Jetronic 0-280-000-544 (spare); no idea at this point which is original.

I have tried some of the EZ-116K troubleshooting procedures for the ECU, but the terminal numbers don't seem to correspond with those listed in the Bentley book. For example, with the ignition on, I get 12.5V at terminal #1, but not at terminal #6.

Any ideas which ignition system I have, or how I can positively identify which one I have?

Many thanks,
jinglevo

I guess it is the Volvo/Chrysler system, as it doesn't have the OBD. But I am still puzzled about why the Bentley manual would have lots of troubleshooting information about the ECU on the EZ-116K system and none at all about the (apparently very similar) ECU on the Volvo/Chrysler system. Any thoughts?

Both 0 280 000 544 and 0 280 000 554 use the same replacement part number.
