Hi guys,
Everytime I park my car and turn the engine off, the key won't release from the lock, it won't turn to position 0 to allow me to remove it, the only time I can remove it is when I push the shifter a bit then I hear a click and the key will then be released from the lock, sometimes while the engine is off I have to press the brake and change the shifter position and then put it back to the P position and the key will get released.
Has anyone had this problem before? What am I looking at here?
Thanks

Ignition Key Won't Release
It's usually a broken plastic piece of plastic on the shifter assembly. Remove the bezel from around the shifter and look for a cracked yellow cap on the left side. It has a cable running thru it from the ignition switch. It is serviceable.
If you find that it's not the previously mentioned yellow plastic piece that is broken, take a good look at your shifter assembly. Could have a crack on the inside of it. Own a 05 xc90 v8 and about a year or so ago my shifter knob broke. When you depress the knob a small metal rob pushes a plastic piece up and allows for shifting. The plastic piece that moves inside the knob broke and would not allow me to shift the "conventional" way. (In a city with no Volvo dealership at the time. Perfect! Had to stick my small finger in and move it that way. Glad I figured it out.)
If you find this is the case, you will have to buy a new shifter. It is very easy to install. I found one online but my dealer was actually cheaper. If you do buy one from Volvo, open the box before you leave and see if there are instructions. Mine had instructions on how to do everything. If you do change it, be very careful removing plastic pieces around the trim of the shifter. It is very easy to break.
Volvo wanted $245/US for parts and labor. Said it would take about an hour. Took me 10 minutes. Cost me about $85 for part. Let me know if you need instructions. Be happy to help the best I can.

thanks ttulefty for your reply,
its always good to know what part you need to replace before sending the car to the dealer. If you do have a diagram and/or part # that would be great, right now, every-time I put the shifter in P position and turn off the engine, I have to push the shifter gently forward, only then I hear a small click and the key releases right away. The only time I had really hard time and pushing the shifter didn't help me at is when the temperature fell down to -18C and I couldn't release the key easily.
I will definitely have to replace it at some point this year.
Thanks again
