engine power down

Post by thor777 »

Hi. I got a 96' 850 GLE 2.5 l non turbo. I recently changed the spark plugs as the car was practically running on a few cylinders - all changed and it was running like new after that change. So that was a few months ago, when the same thing happend again - the engine is running very rough and has 50% of power and struggles getting up hills. I checked all the plugs and they were in good condition - so what can be the new problem with thie lack of power and rough ideling. all advice much appreciated.

We can guess all day but getting the codes read will help us help you. If it is that far down on power there is likely a Check Engine or Lambda light on. If you can get the codes read and post back the code numbers it will tell us a lot more than just guessing.

If it's a 10 valve engine number beginning with B5252S it's likely the Fenix system by Siemens won't report much at all. When our 850 was misfiring and stalling last month because of a failed rotor button there were no codes at all.

What does your engine number begin with?

To complete the thread did you end up solving your 850s problem?

Hopefully it's up and running again.

Hey no worries never got to find out what motor you have fitted (whether it's a B5252S or B5254S )

If you are happy to take instruction and have some tools most of the repairs can be dealt with by the enthusiatic DIYer (hence the reason this forum exists)

If people keep on asking questions they are usually led to a cheaper and more satisfying outcome than going to a dealer.

Let us all know what the outcome is and I'm sure we can all help.

Hi. Well good news, problem solved - local Volvo mechanic fixed all in no time at all - due to "the most blocked breather hose ever" , oil was getting into #5 cylinder, as it had less compression than what was coming out of the dip stick hole.
One spark plug changed as well - so all now firing in line and on time - cost Aud $140.00 cash - runs like a dream now and no oil leak. Next is registration check tomorrow - for another 6 months of trouble free cruising...I hope.
So I gave it a bash, and thanks to all the advice, but the time got the better of me, and the pros fixed it..and I think i got away pretty cheap...this time.
Ps. Actually one problem here in Oz is the cheaper E10 ( 10% ethanol fuel content ) that does not agree with older cars - so now I am back to 95 octane gas....
