Axle popped out (was RIP Transmission?)

Rotating one wheel (front end in air) doesn't move the other at all, just a muted click inside the transmission.

Is this RIP transmission?

It let go as I was moving off a stoplight, all gears freewheel.

Even reverse? That is odd. I'd double check both axles.

rspi, you saved my 850. It was the driver's side axle. It was about one inch out. A few taps and it's back, wheels acting normal. Now... why was it out? Hmm. To be continued.

Man, I don't know. I have read that a few times where it poped out a little and caused the car to just stop moving.

That's what happened. (Whew! I was going to have to eat a lot of words I'd written here about the strength of the Aisin 4-sp auto trans.)

No circlip is causing the inner axle to slip out. When I changed the axle a year ago, no circlip was on the OEM axle, none came with the reman axle, so none went back in. I thought that's the way this is... that the shortness of the axle just kept it in on this side, despite reading that both sides have them. You know how some years are odd for the way things are configured?

It did stay in for a year. I replaced the axle on my 850 in November 2011.

I'll be calling a dealer tomorrow to see if I can buy the clip.

I'll bet Marty at Raxles has a bunch of them that he just throws away. I can't find that Volvo calls the clip out as a separate part number.

The longer passenger side uses that bearing cap instead of a circlip. This is the second instance I've read that this has happened. Really odd that it lasted a year. Glad it's easily fixed even if you need to buy a new axle, that is a lot easier than replacing the trans...
