Hello everyone,
I am buying a 1996 850 Turbo in a couple of weeks. It needs its steering rack replaced, and I have already sourced a used one. In preparing to do this replacement I have a couple of questions:
Do I really need new bolts for the steering rack and subframe as it recommends?
and what can I substitute for the lifting brace that goes over top of the engine if the car is going to be up on a lift? Can I simply support it from below the whole time?
Thanks!

In rust belt it is a great idea to replace those bolts only because of the rust. Most of the mentioned bolts are not torqued to yield but are ones with factory applied locking compound and are renewed for the locking compound.
You really need an engine lift frame as the subframe needs to come down lower than hoses and other things will allow. The engine being held up and just lowering the subframe is way easier.

Thank you. There's a local indie Volvo shop-- i will check and see if I can rent the engine lift frame.
The car has spent its life in DC so I may be ok on the rust front, but I will take that into consideration before executing.

Thanks! I will try to determine from my friend the location of the leak to see if this will work.cn90 wrote:You might want to read this...a volvospeed member replaced the seals without removing the SR from the car!
