Bad fuel filter?

Post by daveojr77 »

Ok, so I went to crank up the 99 V70 this week and it fired up but the idle dropped down to 4-500 but then does back up and stabilizes. Then I drove it to town and came to a stop and the idle does the same thing, yet it wont stabilize until I’m at a complete stop.

While driving I don’t get any loss of power, hesitation, or codes being thrown.

I’ve done a bit of browsing and it seems like its the fuel filter or the brake booster.

Hopefully its the fuel filter which is a simple job. I’m going to get one from AutoZone or advanceauto, would either of these be fine?

Also if it turns out to be the brake booster, how hard of a job is that?

This could be a lot of things, these come to mind:

vacuum leak
dreaded ETM (has it ever been upgraded?)

I'm not sure why you think fuel filter or brake booster, but perhaps it could be one of those too.

I thought it could be a vacuum leak as well. I did notice that the Air Intake Hose had a tear in the end that fits over the ETM. I know Im going to replace that as well.

BTW, does this car have a turbo? Especially if it's a turbo, that torn air intake will cause problems, gotta start with fixing it.

Is the Check Engine Light (CEL) on?

No turbo base model, no lights on at all. No check engine or ETS light. The wagon does have 183XXX on it and I recently did a tune up & oil change but no fuel filter. Ive read other posts from here that people had similar probs and turned out to be a bad/dirty fuel filter.

Either way Im gonna start with those 2 items and go from there.

As far as fuel filter, does it matter which brand I use?

I always buy the Bosch filter but whenever I do I think "it seems like it is pretty hard to screw up a fuel filter." Oil filters you can mess up but a cheap fuel filter you may just want to change a little sooner.

Oops that was unclear - on the Volvos I use Bosch fuel filters and strictly Mann oil filters. I believe other oil filter makes are fine but I just pick up a case of Mann when I get low.
