Replacing Cam Position Sensor Correctly in 1996 Volvo 960

Post by Texspindle1 »

We have just taken out an old Bosch Cam Position Sensor since it was diagnosed as defective Cam Sensor and replaced it with a new Bosch one in my 1996 Volvo 960 Wagon. It had no missfires at that time, but now it is registering misfires on cylinders 2, 4, and random misfires with Check Engine Light flashing. Is there a correct way to install the new Cam Sensor or line it up somehow? Thought maybe we may have mispositioned it or something that caused the diagnostic codes for these misfires to come up, although it only has two bolts to screw in on the Bosch. Can anyone help please with advise as to why this would happen and how we can correct this situation? Thank you so much! We really appreciate and need more expert advice. Thanks again!

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

The camshaft position sensor can not be positioned incorrectly. The plug attached to the sensor should only fit in its socket one way. Have you pushed the plug in as far as it will go?

You must have had fault codes on the initial diagnosis. Have you erased these codes? If codes are stored they will still affect performance when the new part is fitted. Out of interest what were the codes?

If codes for misfires are being set I can't see the CPS doing this.

Do you have spark at the plugs? Was anything else disturbed while testing for the CPS problem? Perhaps coil wires were placed on the wrong coils (easy to do on a 960)

Dear Bill and Copster:

Thank you so much for taking the time to think about our problem and reply and try to advise.
Bill, thank you for assuring us we could not mess up the install on the position of the new Cam Sensor on the 1996 Volvo 960. Copster, we will now check those spark plugs again and coils and see if something there was misdone or not working. We'll see. I thank you both for your kindnesses and expertises, and Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you both in England and Melbourne, Australia! (I am in Waco, Texas. Not one American replied--so thank you international fine people.)
