Roof rack, mounted directly to roof rails?

Post by futureboycolin »

Hi guys. I'll be moving at the end of February and I'm looking into roof racks/cargo baskets. Everything I see from Thule and Yakima, etc, all mount to to crossbars that are mounted to the roof rails. Seems counterproductive to have to buy crossbars AND the rack.

Anyone know of a rack that mounts directly to the roof rails that are already installed? Is it possible to modify a Yakima rack to fit that way? Any help is appreciated, thanks guys!

If I understand your question correctly you want to mount a Yak/Tule rack to the OEM crossbars, without having to purchase clamps for the side rails and tubluar cross bars. Yakama (though I don't know about Tule) have mouting clips that are shaped like most (most) OEM crossbars, oval or wing-shaped, that you can bolt your favorite roof appliance to. Which I think works for most attachments like bike racks etc. If you plan to put on a cargo basket you may have difficulty with clearances between the basket and the OEM rails due to curvature of roof and crossbars. Check the YAK/Tule websites for specifics, they have a ton of options and adapters. There is also duct tape which fits every car and every application!! :D Good luck
