Starter in the 2004 V40

Post by kevinevans »

Hi all,
I was wondering if somebody could help me locate the starter in the 2004 V40? I am considering jumping the starter solenoid so I can take it to a mechanic (to fix the ignition cylinder). I can't seem to find it anywhere by looking top-down, so I'm guessing it's somewhere underneath where I have to jack up the car.

I don't have car stands and my only jack is the tire-changing jack, so I'd rather not go out buying stands if the starter can be accessed through the top.

Thanks,
Kevin

Under the steering column is a cover you can remove. On the left side is a electrical center with some relays. The left bottom relay is for starter. Remove the relay. Look at relay bottom and you'll see the blade terminals. Locate the two that if they touched would make a "T" (perpendicular to each other, no the other ones that are parallel). Jumper the perpendicular ones and the starter will work. Make sure it is in Park as this bypasses the neutral switch and it would crank over in gear.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I wasn't sure which ones should be jumped, so I took a picture.

Left-most part:

On the steering column:

Edit: There is no center terminal so it wont really make a T.

It's more like (if this makes any sense):

Code: Select all

Okay, so I looked at the mini schematics on the relay and it indicates that the 3rd and 5th terminals should be jumped.

I had to jump it and rev the engine a little bit while in park to make it work. Thanks!
