Hmmm... the oil pan should have nothing to do with you burning oil. The only scenario I can think of is that your engine was already burning some oil at the same time it was being starved of oil, and now that it's got good oil pressure back, it's simply burning a lot more.
You might want to try a thicker (10W-40) oil, and one that is "High Mileage". I use Mobil 1 10W-40 HM with good results. I lose very little oil and other people have had good success using it to stop oil burning.

Thanks
I put in 10-30 High mileage oil. I also checked and my PVC system is clogged. I get steam and when I put a glove over the oil filler area it fills with air. Not surprising the PVC system is clogged given how badly my oil screen was so clogged.

Very useful detailed post. Does anybody know if the 2001 and later V70's are the same. I have read posts saying it is a fiddly TEN hour job just to get the pan off. I get the impression there must be differences.

I think the procedure is basically the same, but you may run into some little things that may need to be changed/adapted for the different model.

"My oil pan is different than yours. Mine does NOT have the oil cooler. I looks a bit different, just wondering how many seals I should be replacing?"
This is what I'm wondering. I have a '98 s70 T5 and the oil pan is off but I didn't take it off; I don't know where the o-rings go to put back together. Any advice is appreciated.
I have the oil sump o-ring kit from FCP(I think)/victor reinze, plus i have the turbo oil cooler line kit too - so I have that rectangular o-ring for the "side" of the pan.
TIA for any help

One other little tip that is worth considering if you have gone to the trouble of taking the sump off, make sure the PCV oil return path that is cast in to the block AND the sump is clear, with the sump off the car it is fairly easy to clean this out fully, with the sump attached it can be difficult to clear a build up of carbon from within the casting - Mike
